Work
I heard this morning that there is a prominent medical Doctor who has thrown in his important research to train to become a gas fitter - at which job he can be expected to earn £50,000 per year. I hope it won't be too long before more parents who are home-schooling recognise that 'exams' are not so important after all. We don't want all children to go to university if we have a growing need for men doing real jobs like plumbing / gas fitting / decorating etc.
We don't want to fall into the trap of encouraging our sons to work at whatever will make the most money, for the sake of having lots of money, but we DO want them to be able to work at a job by means of which they will earn enough to provide a home and not have to put their wife out to work in order to survive.
So if you are home-schooling sons, keep a portfolio with photos and any kind letters that people send you confirming how helpful and pleasant your sons are (!!!) and when they come to 16 or 17 go along to the local 6th-form college to enrol them on a GNVQ course. Better still, find a tradesman of integrity and apprentice your son to him so that he can learn not only how to do the job safely and intelligently but diligently and faithfully too.
