We're studying Edmund Burke - Reflections on the Revolution in France. I reckon EVERYONE should read this book. In short, he recognises that there are things wrong with the Britain of his time. He also has a firm understanding of the fact that the Lord is the one who raises up Kings and rulers and that any attempt to 'get rid' of them is to be in the light of that fact. Interesting that he pointed out how disgracefully the French dealt with Louis the 16th - their own monarch. When the Brits captured their king in the 1400's he was brought to London and treated with the honour due to his rank (that is to say, better than the French treated their own king....).
Burke makes very long sentences - it's hard to get used to but a great deal of fun. When you consider them you soon realise that there wouldn't be any way of chopping them up into 5-word segments and saying NEARLY the same as he is doing. Further encouragement for my naughty habit.
what a good thing that 'Age of Opportunity' arrived today - otherwise I would have been reading Burke in my spare time....
thomas looked a little anxious when A o O arrived and scanned through it. He found some amusing bits which I got him to read aloud (while I untied the knots on the rope I needed to complete the 'trapeze' I bought from Ebay for the little children) - he looked less worried after that but is awaiting, with interest, any consequences of my reading (for him!). What I've read so far is re-iterating what Tedd Tripp says about raising children - all good stuff, not rocket science. I'm glad I've still got children who are (or are going to become) teenagers because I've got another chance at NOT messing up - but I should pray more first.....
